Albanian history and culture is fascinating. Butrint, one of the world's archeological wonders - and a UNESCO World Heritage site - in the south of Albania provides a glimpse of Home of both Mother Theresa and the great 15th Century hero Skanderbeg, Albania today offers not only beach and mountain holidays, but also a vibrant city life, a relaxing outdoor cafe culture and you will see that it's quickly evolving in a myriad of directions.

November 2012 marked the 100th anniversary of independence in Albania from Turkish rule.

  • Under the leadership of Enver Hoxha, Albania was declared the world’s first atheist state in 1967
  • Tirana, the capital of Albania is one of the few European capital cities to not have a McDonalds. However, it does have a chain named Kolonat whose logo looks suspiciously familiar!
  • The official name for Albania is "Republika e Shqiperise" meaning the Republic of Albania.
  • Between 1950 to 1985 around 60,000 bunkers were built in Albania, they are nearly impossible to destroy so many are still in existence.
  • Nodding your head in Albania is a disagreement while shaking the head means "yes", so it can get pretty confusing for tourists!
  • At its closest point Albania is only 10km away from Corfu across the Ionian Sea.
  • Xhiro is the name for an evening walk in Albania. Some of the towns close roads to cars at certain times of the evening so locals can talk their daily stroll.



Tirana is the capital and the largest city of Albania. More than 1/4 of the overall population of Albania permanently live in Tirana. It is a very dynamic city, where the heart of the country beats. It is a city of contrasts, where the modern lifestyle meets old traditions. Still rapidly growing Tirana is a busy commercial and administrative center with many comfortable hotels, restaurants, discos, pubs and a rich cultural life. 

Tirana has a Mediterranean climate. The average temperature varies from a low of 2°C in January to a high of 32°C in July and August which are also the driest months, each with around 3 cm of precipitation on average. 

The main cultural and artistic institutions of Tirana are the National Theater, the Theater of Opera and Ballet, the National Gallery of the Arts (Galeria Kombëtare e Arteve), and the Ensemble of Folk Music and Dances. Another cultural event includes performances of reknown world composers performed by the Symphonic Orchestra of the Albanian Radio and Television.


Must-see sights in Tirana
  • The Fortress of Pertrela It is located at south of Tirana on the right side of national road linking capital with the city of Elbasan. It was built up by the middle age. The castle was under the command of Scanderbeg sister, Mamica Kastrioti.
  • The fortress of Preza, belongs to the XV century. It has a very nice and dominant position in front of Kruja mountain.
  • The Mosque of Ethem Bey is situated just at the center of Tirana. It was constructed in 1789. Together with the Clock Tower ( 1830). they make a important historic part of Tirana.
  • Ministries represents architectonic values. They were built in the year 1930, when Albania was a kingdom.
  • The bridge of Tabakeve is situated along the boulevard “Zhan Dark”. It belongs to the XVIII century.
